Shiver of History (1)

Proposal for TSG as the Great Toronto Fire, 1904

“Have you occasionally experienced something like that -the shiver of history?”
-from Gustave Flaubert in letters to Louise Colet, 1851-55

In 2009 I proposed a body of work for the Toronto Sculpture Garden that referenced the elevation of the east wall of the garden and photographs of the Toronto fire of 1904. As often in my studio practice, I start with drawings and paper models -in this case a cutout of the east elevation of TSG, set up in raking light to create a shadow. The subsequent shadow cutouts were then placed/modeled after a photograph of the Great Toronto Fire and photographed in found sunlight and with flame.
